Many states have legalized cannabis (marijuana) for medical use and for recreational purposes. THC remains a Schedule I substance, and, thus, there has been relatively little research regarding its medicinal uses, especially in dentistry. However, with the signing of the “2018 Farm Bill”, CBD derived from hemp now enjoys de-scheduled status and there is increasing interest in its potential use as a treatment for a variety of conditions, as well as several proposed uses in dentistry. This program will introduce dental professionals to the pharmacology of cannabis, THC, CBD and other cannabinoids, including routes of administration and adverse effects. Special emphasis will be placed on the proposed uses of cannabis and cannabinoids in dentistry for the management of patient anxiety and odontogenic pain.
